Thursday evening was spent in Smithfield with a new friend enjoying incredibly delicious food, fascinating conversation, wonderful music and a lovely spring walk!

On Friday, I drove up with my oldest friend Melody, her sister Heather and cousin Jill (also an old friend who I haven't seen in several years) to D.C. to celebrate Melody's birthday.

We spent Saturday afternoon at the Library of Congress!
(As those of you who know me well can imagine, I was in a state of speechless happiness for most of the day :)

(They have large portions of Thomas Jefferson's Library on display!!)

(The Main Reading Room)

On Sunday, Melody and Heather went rock climbing and Jill and I went to wonder about the Eastern Market. There were gorgeous carvings, fresh smelling soaps, fascinating old maps, handwoven rugs and silk scarves, flowers and fresh fruit. It was all so lovely.

Then we found a coffee shop where we settled down to read and talk for a few hours.

Then came (perhaps) my favorite part of the trip: a bookstore so happy that my powers of expression fail with delight. Books on books on books, piled everywhere but carefully organized and helpfully marked with scraps of paper directing in old handwriting to the particular location of a well loved author ("Emily Dickinson under the radiator" or "Sir Walter Scott over the radio") It was full to the brim with all the best authors in a variety of editions and reasonably priced.
I could very happily live there.
